Velma Foote

April 24, 1922 — March 29, 2020

Velma Scott Foote

Velma Scott Foote passed quietly from this life Sunday, March 29, 2020. She was born in Provo, Utah, on April 24, 1922, a daughter of True and Emma Lunceford Scott. Growing up on Provo's west side, she and her siblings spent much of their youth working on the family farm, growing and selling a variety of vegetables. After her brother Ivan's death at 17, Velma was given the responsibility of caring for and driving a team of large (nice, but scary) horses to work the fields (not her favorite thing). She was also involved in irrigating the fields, harvesting and boxing the vegetables, then loading them up to "take to town".

Velma attended Provo High School, but her education was interrupted, because her father needed her to help on the farm. She went back later and graduated. She met Dell Snyder Foote at a local dance and they were married Christmas Day, 1943 (later solemnized in the Jordan River Temple). They lived with his parents until July, 1946, when they purchased a poultry and dairy farm in the west area of Provo (where they built their own home). It was a successful business and they took pride in their registered Jersey cattle and laying hens. Eggs and milk were sold at the farm, as well as to stores and restaurants. Along the way, they were able to "hatch" three daughters.

In 1972 they retired from the egg business, sold the property and moved to a home on West Center Street. In 2002 they sold that home and moved to Lehi. Unfortunately her later years were plagued by progressive dementia. After Dell passed away in 2012, Velma lived in the homes of Deanne and LaJean until December of 201 8, when she was placed in the Be1 Aire Assisted Living facility in American Fork, where she resided until her death.

Velma was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a model of faithfulness to her daughters and other extended family members. Among her callings she enjoyed serving in the Primary for 15 years and also for 23 years as a counselor in the Relief Society assigned to an elderly care facility near their home on West Center Street.  Velma was active in family history. She also loved flowers, especially roses, and had a quarter acre "bouquet" of them in her yard.

Velma is survived by her three daughters, Ileen (Ellsworth) Webb of American Fork, Deanne (Michael) White of Pleasant Grove and LaJean (David) Ryan of Bluffdale, 12 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and a brother-in-law (C.L. Smith). She was preceded in death by her parents, her 7 siblings (Ivan, Ina, Lucile, Robert, Verlon, June and Norma), and a great-granddaughter (Elizabeth Webb).

Velma never sought the limelight; rather she was a humble, dependable person who sought to live the gospel and quietly serve not only her family and friends, but anyone who needed help. As her descendants and family, we honor the legacy of her exemplary life. We know she awaits a great eternal reward and our hearts are full as we bid her farewell.

Because of current guidelines limiting group gatherings, there will not be a funeral. There will be a limited family viewing on Thursday, April 2 2020, 1:30 pm, at the Anderson & Sons Mortuary, 49 East 100 North, American Fork. The private interment will follow in the Provo City Cemetery.

In Lieu of sending flowers the family is asking that your plant living flowers in remembrance of Velma.
