Kathleen Carol Scott

April 24, 1950 ~ June 24, 2020

Kathleen Carol Hanford Scott, our precious wife, mother, grandmother and friend, left this world on June 24, 2020. Kathy is known for her kindness, humility, optimism, her love of artificial flowers, and her sense of style and humor. Her sweet and pure spirit lives on. She is now wrapped in the arms of our Savior.

Kathy was born to Carol and Dr. Kenneth Hanford, on April 24,1950 in Bakersfield, CA. In her childhood, she enjoyed reading Nancy Drew novels and singing in the Glee Club.  She remembers vacations playing golf with her family and going to Disneyland.  She graduated from Bakersfield High School and was proud to be a BHS Driller.

Kathy met and fell in love with Bradford Kent Scott while attending UC Davis.  The fondest memories of their early years together were spent during the college summers working in the Tetons with dear friends with whom they still share friendship today. They were married in a Latter-day Saint chapel in Bakersfield, CA on June 23, 1973, and just celebrated 47 years of marriage.  The love between “Squeek” and “Hoot” has always been strong and admired.

Kathy worked as a registered dietician for the Visiting Nurses Association of San Bernadino, CA for over 30 years.  In that capacity, she saved lives and changed lives, and showed love, kindness and mercy for those with ailing health.  Many times, patients would write special notes to her to tell her what a difference she had made for them, and most notably to thank her for her kindness.  Her co-workers loved working with her and were often recipients of her tasty treats—yes, this dietician ALWAYS made room for dessert if it was worth the calories!

Community activism filled many of her years as she worked to keep things moving in the right direction.  Two of her biggest accomplishments were getting plans for a major trash incinerator factory moved to a location out of our city, as well as getting new schools built to support the children of South Ontario.  She and Brad also hosted Neighborhood “Night Out” for years to help foster relationships among their neighbors.

Kathy’s heart was pure and she loved everyone with Christlike love. Gifting was her love language. There is hardly a person who has crossed her path who hasn’t been a benefactor of her kindness and thoughtfulness.  She is one to leave anonymous gifts on doorsteps if she noticed a need, or just because she was thinking of them.  If you mentioned you loved Skittles, you might find a bag on your doorstep within a day or so.  Many have been recipients of her thoughtfulness for birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and holidays—she could always find a reason to share her love.  Even acquaintances can account for this, as she has supported countless missionaries who have never even met her.

Family is where K.C.’s heart was most fulfilled.  She loved her children and grandchildren dearly and loved to share in their joys, accomplishments and birthday celebrations.  She always wanted to provide opportunities for family fun.  When her children were young, she was the ultimate soccer mom, taking her kids to every activity imaginable, constantly encouraging them to build confidence.  When she and Brad retired and moved from Ontario, CA to Highland, UT, she bought and curated her new home with family gatherings and grandchildren in mind.  She made holidays special with treats and care packages, and notes of love and encouragement.

Kathy was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her love for Jesus Christ ran deep as it changed her life from darkness to light.  She served in countless capacities through the years—Boy Scouts, Compassionate Service Leader, Enrichment Leader, Relief Society, Young Womens and Primary… but her heart was always in Primary with the little children.  She loved them and they loved her back.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carol and Ken Hanford, as well as her older brother Kenny.  She is survived by her loving husband, Bradford Scott DVM, her children, Alecia (Joe) Falk, Zachary (Amita) Scott, and Kenny (Angie) Scott and 10 (spoiled) grandchildren:  Sawyer, Ethan and Noah Falk; Rohan and Kiran Scott; Zachary, Devon, Kinley, Declan and Sarah Scott. She is also survived by her siblings Bart Hanford, of San Andreas, CA; Bonnie (Hanford) Elder of Nampa, ID; and Greg Hanford of Bakersfield, CA, as well as many nieces and nephews.

We are sincerely grateful to the Highland 37th Ward for all of the remarkable acts of love and service that have been bestowed upon Kathy and our family in the past few months of her illness.  We also want to thank all of the doctors, nurses and therapists at Intermountain Medical Center, and our hospice nurses from Encompass Health who have been so wonderful. We have been truly touched.
