Janet Patricia (Sullivan) Oles

March 6, 1957 ~ May 14, 2021 (age 64)

Obituary

Our loving wife, mother and grandmother passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on May 14th 2021. She was born in Alpine California. A true country girl, who lived in a small home on 13 acres. She had many cherished memories of living in the country and ever since has loved planting and watching things grow.

When she was 11 she moved closer to the city where she was very active in basketball, swimming and public speaking. Janet would say she was a terrible dribbler, but she was a great rebounder and had a quick turnaround shot so the coach kept her on the court. Janet also won 2nd place in a statewide California speech competition of all boys.

She always tried to focus on what she had talent in and then make it better. She never let fear get the best of her, instead she kept positive and kept trying no matter what. Janet loved to go sea fishing with her father in San Diego, whom she loved dearly. She joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with her family when she was 12 years old. She went to BYU for one year and was later married to the love of her life, Wayne Oles in the Los Angeles Temple in 1979.

Janet was loved dearly by her sweet husband who faithfully was by her side in everything she needed and loved. Together they overcame 3 rounds of cancer and experienced many miracles that she always acknowledged came from God, prayer and fasting.

Her family moved to American Fork Utah in 1991. Janet’s daughter joined a little summer swim recreation program at the old American Fork pool down at Rotary park. Janet would come every day to watch and occasionally sub for the coaches. With a new pool being built, Janet and a few others created Hilltop Aquatic Swim Team where she would go on to coach for 25 more years. Thousands of swimmers have trained under Janet and have gone on to swim collegiately, Olympic trials, as well as become coaches and parents themselves. She loved her HAST family dearly.

More than anything Janet loved her Savior Jesus Christ. She was a light to everyone she met. She spread kindness and compassion where ever she went. She saw the best in everyone and because of that people were inspired to rise to what she saw in them. Her ever far reaching desire to love others was felt by so many. She lived her life listening to the Holy Ghost and then courageously acted on what He told her to do. Her last week of her life she had been tending lovingly to her garden and was at so much peace there.

Her grandchildren who lived with her lovingly saw her more than a grandma, more than a coach. She was their second mother who loved them more than anything. She felt extremely grateful her daughter and two grandchildren could live with her for the last 7 years together.

She is survived by her husband Wayne Oles, daughter Sonrisa Oles Hasselbach, brother Danny Sullivan, Grandchildren Kalia and Jetty Hasselbach as well as nieces and nephews and family in California. She was lovingly welcomed home by her Parents, Norma and Jim Sullivan, and her sister Nan Sullivan.
