William Finney

October 28, 1940 — July 18, 2025

William Henry Finney, 84, of Salt Lake City, departed this world on July 18, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on October 28, 1940, to George Washington Finney and Genevieve Ellen Lynch Finney in East Chicago, Indiana.
Bill lived a vibrant life filled with fun times with friends and family that lasted from the time he was a small child until his last days on earth. He loved to tell stories, travel, and enjoy wonderful food and drink. He loved to play cribbage, board games and cards. He enjoyed driving to Wyoming to buy lottery tickets and was always up for a road trip and was always the one behind the wheel. He had an unyielding passion for connection and made fast friends everywhere he went.
Bill married his childhood sweetheart Charlotte Larsen, on June 14, 1960, in American Fork, Utah, embarking on a journey that would see him become a devoted father and grandfather. Although they later divorced, they continued to be friends and the warmth of their shared years lingered in the hearts of their family.
Bill loved being involved in his community. He felt it was very important to help where he could and wanted to be a useful citizen. He was a member of the Salt Lake Democratic Party in the late 60's through the rest of his life. He served as a national delegate representing Utah for many years. He worked for Salt Lake County as the Finance Director, was a county surveyor, and later worked for Salt Lake County as the Director of Sanitation.
Bill also was a business entrepreneur. His adventurous spirit led him to start numerous businesses throughout his life. The most recent one was Wheelchair Getaways of Utah a handicap accessible van rental business. He had a passion for connecting with people that he could help go places. At the time of his death, he happily passed this business onto his son James and grandson Evan.
Bill was a beloved resident of Friendship Manor for over 25 years, where he brought joy and camaraderie to his neighbors, offering friendship and support that brightened their days. He loved playing weekly poker games and sharing stories with his friends there.
Bill leaves a legacy of love and friendship, survived by his devoted partner of 22 years, Lisa Smith, his cherished children, daughters Jill Finney (Van) Johnson, Jean Finney, (Kenton) Smith and son James Finney. He will be missed by his six grandchildren-Shea, Aaron (Britni), Quinn, Delaney, Jane (Carter), Evan (McKenna-and his great-grandchildren, Finney and Owen, who brought him immense joy. His grandchildren named him "Grandpa Happy" because he was always cheery and ready for adventure when he was with them. He felt very fortunate to share his life with many nieces and nephews that meant so much to him. The family would like to thank Enhabit Hospice for the love and care they showed Bill as he transitioned to his next adventure.
To honor Bill a celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Details of which will be announced in the near future. Let us come together to share stories, laughter, and memories as we celebrate the legacy he leaves behind. Rest in Love our dear Bill.
