SHIRLEY RUTH ALLEN -1927-2023

Shirley Ruth Allen passed away on June 29, 2023, surrounded by family and friends. She was born in Provo, Utah to Albert B. Allen and Hortense Garrett, but moved to American Fork to make her first home.

She was educated in American Fork graduating from the High School in 1945. She then attended Brigham Young University, majoring in Physical Education. While there she played on many intramural teams and expanded her love of sports.

Following her graduation in 1949, she obtained a teaching position with the Springville Jr. and Sr. High school making many life-lomg friends there. In 1954 she decided to further her education and obtained a teaching assistantship at the Utah State Ag. College (Utah State University), receiving a Master's Degree in one year. The next thirty-one years of teaching was spent in the Granite School District in Salt Lake City. She taught one year at Granite Park Jr. High, fifteen years at Olympus High School, and the last fifteen years of her teaching at the newly opened Cottonwood High School. She served on many professional committees' and at one time was the President of the Utah State Health, Physical Education and Recreation teachers and directed their fall convention. She served on the committee that helped established State wide competition for the girls in the State of Utah. She coached many sports teams that won State championships. She loved to garden, play golf and traveled to many different places.

She was an active member of the Latter-day Saints Church serving mostly as a teacher of the Gospel Doctrine class and serving in the Relief Society. Following her retirement she served a Church Mission in the California Fresno Mission and upon her return served for twenty-four years as an ordinance worker in the Provo and the Mount Timpanagos Temple.

She was proceeded in death by her parents and a brother. She is survived by three nephews; Paul (Peg), Bruce (Mary Anne), and Rick Hillier and her sister Beth Ann Hiller. She was also loved and helpful to their children. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 5, 2023 at 11:00 AM the American Fork 17th Ward, 240 South Center St. A viewing will be held from 9:45-10:45 AM at the church prior to the services.
