Sarah Western

Sarah Stayner Western, (100), of Pleasant Grove, Utah, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2024.

Sarah was born on March 17, 1924 in Malad, Idaho into the loving home of Henry Turner Stayner and Sarah Ann Jones Stayner. She grew up a hard-working farm girl surrounded by five sisters and two brothers who were her best friends. Sarah graduated from Malad High School in 1942. The following January, she moved to Hollywood, California with her older sister, Venice, and worked as a typist for 1 ½ years. Sarah then attended Brigham Young University majoring in Sociology, and was dorm president for two years. At BYU, she met the love of her life, Ralph James Western from Pocatello, Idaho. They were married on September 4, 1946 in the Salt Lake Temple and began married life in Provo, Utah. Having served in World War II, Ralph rejoined the military and Sarah was a supportive military wife in their many moves. They lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, San Antonio, Texas, Washington D.C., Chateauroux, France, El Paso,Texas, Great Falls, Montana, London, England, Albuquerque, New Mexico and Lancaster,California. They had four children, Jim, Bill, Lee Ann and Sara Annette. Each child was born in a different place. After retirement, Ralph and Sarah moved to Orem, Utah and then Pleasant Grove, Utah.

Sarah was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in many capacities including Primary President, Relief Society President and counselor, and Young Women Advisor. Sarah was very creative and loved to sew for her daughters, care for her flower garden, take pictures of her grandchildren, decorate her home, and cook marvelous meals. Following the death of her beloved husband on May 21, 1981, Sarah became a Nutritional Wellness Consultant and for over 25 years enjoyed helping people. She was deeply loved by her family and was often called the "Teenage Grandma" because of her youthful energy, positive attitude, and joy for life.

Sarah is survived by her children, James Ralph (Linda) Western, William David (Pat) Western, Lee Ann W. (Michael) Hemingway, Sara Annette Western, 16 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, five sisters, one brother, and one great-granddaughter. Her younger brother, Jay Lynn Stayner, passed away hours later on the same day as Sarah.

A Family Memorial Service celebrating her life will be held on Friday, November 22, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. at Anderson and Sons Mortuary, Lone Peak Chapel, 6141 W. 11000 N., Highland Utah. A viewing will be held from 5:45-6:45 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will be at at 1:00 p.m. in the Malad City Cemetery,  Malad, Idaho the following day.
