Richard “Dick” Lowell Tyler, 96 years old, of Alpine, Utah passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Wednesday, June 4th , 2025. He lived a long and active life. He was born a healthy 9 lbs. 10 oz baby boy on January 24, 1929 in Grand Ledge, Michigan to Oren Lowell Tyler and Dorothy Olive Dean.

Dick along with his younger brother, Ron grew up in a loving home. At age 12 he moved to Jackson, Michigan. While in Jackson, he learned to play the accordion. He had many fond memories of childhood friends that he kept in touch with throughout his life.

He graduated from Jackson High School in 1947. He went on to college and graduated from Michigan State University in 1951 with a bachelor’s degree in Geology. In Oct 1951, he enlisted in the Army during the Korean War and served for three years. He was stationed at the Oakland Army Base in California as well as in Alaska working in a petroleum lab.

After the Army, in April 1955, he worked for a short time helping with the building of the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan. He always felt thankful to have had this once in a lifetime opportunity.

In 1956 he started working for City Services which led him to New Mexico and then to Midland,Texas where he met the love of his life, Mary Hubbard at the Bachelors and Belles dance that was put on by the Midland YMCA. They were married on June 7, 1958. They were pleased to share a double wedding with Mary’s sister, Janis, and her fiancé, Edwin O’Neal.

While living in Midland, Dick and Mary were blessed with four beautiful children. In 1960 Dick started working for Shell Oil Company. The family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1966. They were sealed for time and eternity in the Mesa Arizona temple in 1968. Dick loved to share his testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ with many friends and family members wherever he went throughout his life.

In 1973, the family moved to Traverse City, Michigan where they enjoyed snow for the first time. Shell Oil brought them back to Texas in 1980. Both Dick and Mary worked for Shell at their Houston office and retired together in 1989.Dick and Mary were called to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 1990. Shortly after their mission, they moved to Utah to be with all of their children. In 1997, Dick and Mary moved to Alpine, Utah where they lived their remaining years.

Dick served many years in a variety of church assignments. He gave many hours serving others, including an assignment with Mary to teach prison inmates family history. He had an amazing memory, loved to garden, camp, fish, ski, and watch BYU football. He enjoyed reading the newspaper and church books. He was a handyman around the house. He told his children to leave the place better than you found it and he lived by those words. He was never one to sit around, but wanted to be out and about. He was a very social person and rarely missed a church meeting, social or family gathering. He loved spending time with family and friends. He had a contagious smile and warm personality. He will be greatly missed.
