Mary Ann Burton

May 29, 1943 — August 16, 2021

Mary Ann Nelson Burton passed away peacefully on August 16, 2021 at her home in Alpine, Utah, surrounded by her family. She was born on May 29, 1943, to Jack Emil Nelson and Rachel Hazen Reid in Salt Lake City.

Mary Ann grew up in Rose Park. She and her two sisters and brother enjoyed the blessing of living close to her Grandma Reid and her many dear aunts, uncles and cousins. She graduated from West High School in 1961. She attended the University of Utah.

Mary Ann met her sweetheart, Fredrick James Burton, in 1974, at an LDS Single Adult dance. Fred fell in love with Mary Ann and her two daughters. Mary Ann and Fred married on May 30, 1975, in Bountiful, Utah. Their marriage was solemnized in the LDS Jordan River Temple on November 4, 1983. Mary Ann and Fred added three sons to their family.

Mary Ann’s love of service is something that she has left behind as an example to her family. Her neighbors, childrens' friends and those she served in the community were all included in her care and feeding. If you were to ask her, she would say her greatest accomplishment was raising her family. She made everyone her family.

We love you mom.

Mary Ann is survived by her husband Fred, her children Michelle Squires, Jana (Justin) Williams, Erick (Ashley Hartoch) Burton, Troy (Charity) Burton and Bryan Burton, her sisters, Marge (John) Hadley, Keri (Bob) Dean and her brother, Jack Lee (Sue) Nelson. She has ten grandchildren and one great-grandaughter. She is also survived by a legion of neighborhood kids that made the Burton household their second home. She is proceeded in death by her parents, Jack and Rachel and Fred’s parents, William Lem Burton and Una Vivian Bryan Burton.
