Jay Davis

December 6, 1948 — August 14, 2021

Jay Cannon Davis was a kind, service-oriented husband, father, grandfather, and friend.  A retired microfilm technician and trainer (specializing in genealogy), he lived in São José do Rio Preto, Brazil.  He passed away at the age of 72, on August 14, 2021, and he will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Susana, and his children: Troy Davis, Sheri Davis, Katherine Parker (and six grandchildren), Rain Ferraro (Jesse Davis), and S. Chad Davis.  He is also survived by his father, Walt, and his siblings: Lorraine Wallace, Blair Davis, Glenn Davis, Brian Davis, and Michelle Walz.  He is preceded in death by his mother, Myrle.

Jay was born on December 6, 1948, in Salt Lake City, Utah.  The son of Walter J. Davis and Myrle Chantrill Davis, he grew up in Woodland Hills, California.  He served an LDS mission in Brazil and he has loved traveling, and living and working, with people in Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries ever since.  Jay graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor’s degree in Portuguese and a minor in Spanish and Zoology.  After graduation, he married Elaine A. Stott in the Los Angeles Temple.  They had five children, and they remained married for 28 years; living mostly in Highland, Utah.  He later married Susana De Oliveira Sbrogio, on June 18, 2003, in Orem, Utah.  They were married for 18 years, until the date of his passing.

Jay was an avid hunter and fisherman, who was happiest out in nature.  He loved to travel, and he used his language fluency, in Spanish and Portuguese, in his work among the people of Latin America.  For over 30 years, he taught elderly missionaries, and foreign counterparts of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, how to preserve family history using microfilm.  He loved music, and would tell stories while playing his acoustic guitar to the hits of such legends as John Denver, Bread, Led Zeppelin, and The Beatles.  Jay’s love of music was a lifelong blessing to those around him; on his mission and among family and friends; and it has become a legacy, continuing through his children and grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 6pm on Sunday, August 22, 2021, in the Fox Hollow Ward, 3261 South Village Parkway, in Saratoga Springs, Utah 84045.  Jay is currently buried in Olímpia, SP Brazil.
