Jay Garlick

On June 1, 2024, two weeks after his 95th birthday party, Jay Garlick passed from this life after battling cancer. Gaston Junior "Jay" Garlick was born in Hiawatha, Utah on May 18, 1929 to Gastin and Era M Farnworth Garlick. Jay was a cherished member of the community and American Fork was his home for 85 years. Jay had an excellent and detailed memory and enjoyed sharing stories of his childhood in Hiawatha, Pleasant Grove, Manila, and American Fork. He graduated from American Fork High School in 1947 and recently mentioned that there were just three classmates left.

After serving a mission to the Netherlands from 1949-1951, Jay graduated from BYU in finance and began Y's Realty, his own real estate business based in Provo. He created several land-development projects and was involved in those until the day he died.

Jay married Elaine Hicken on June 27, 1960, in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they raised five children. Jay led a life filled with purpose and dedication to his family and faith. He loved cars, people, raisin-filled cookies, bread and milk, the color red, Holland, missionary work, the Book of Mormon, and the gospel of Jesus Christ.

After Elaine's death in 2000, Jay married Marlene Staley. Marlene passed away in 2014, and at age 87, Jay married Lorna Giggey, who passed away in April 2024.

Jay is survived by his loving children: Steven (Dianne) Garlick, Kami (Alan) Larson, Marné (Bradley) Reneer, David (Annette) Garlick, and son-in-law Paulo Bangerter, 34 grandchildren, 81 great grandchildren, and one sister, Bernice Miller.

Preceded in death by his wife Elaine, his daughter JaLayne Bangerter, one grandchild, one great-grandchild and siblings: Ben, Howard, Bruce, Deverl, O'leah and Helen.

There will be a Public Viewing at the American Fork 8th Ward, 320 North 100 East on June 9, 2024 from 6:00-8:00 pm, followed by another viewing on June 10, 2024 from 9:45-10:45 am. The Funeral Service will also be held at the American Fork 8th Ward on June 10, 2024, at 11:00 am.
