Doyal Evan Stewart, 79, passed away peacefully in his sleep July 23, 2025 at his home in West Jordan, Utah.
Doyal was born April 11, 1946 in Preston, Idaho to Walter W. Stewart and Grace Delores Sonderegger. He was the youngest of three with older sister Carolyn and brother Walter Noel Stewart.
His parents divorced and he moved to Monticello, Utah in the 2nd grade. He began his 63 year construction career at age 7 when he began working with his Uncle Ernest Sonderegger. He moved to Orem, Utah in the 7th grade and spent most of his life in Utah County. During the rest of his childhood he would return to Monticello to work each summer. After graduating from Orem High School he worked for Geneva Steel and saved money for his mission. He was called to the East Central States Mission and served mainly in Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia. His first area was Nashville where he served for 6 months and met many famous country stars. He served as an Assistant to the Mission President for his last 10 months. He traveled and trained and had a fantastic mission that he would share stories about the rest of his life. He liked to baptize in the rivers on his mission including underneath a covered civil war bridge outside Ashland, Kentucky.
He graduated from BYU in Sociology in 1971 and was commissioned an Officer in the US Air Force at that time. He was a pilot and loved his time flying especially in T-37s and T-38s.
He started Stewart & Co Inc in 1970 with his Brother Noel. After his Air Force service he returned to construction doing predominantly General and Electrical contracting as well as engineering. They built up their company over time and had 75 electricians. They helped build the Alta View and VA Hospitals, the Park City and Green River High Schools, missile bases, sewage treatment plant, and countless other commercial projects as well as numerous homes throughout Utah. If you look around Utah you see the things they helped build all around you. His love for aviation also continued and they built a large Hangar at the Provo airport. They would fly workers back in forth to jobs and had Cessna 210s (Tango and Sierra), a Beechcraft 58P Baron and then they got into Helicopters including a Jet Ranger III they bought in Alaska and an Aerospatiale Llama that they loved to fly. They also used numerous other helicopters including Bell 214s to longline equipment into the tops of mountains building telecommunication towers in between Salt Lake and Denver for Telestar one of their other businesses. Their workers loved them and many would say that they were the best bosses and that working with them was the most fun that they had working. He trained many of his children in construction and some of his best time working and fondest memories were working with them. He loved the outdoors and taught his children how to fish, shoot and to hunt. He was an excellent shot and made many amazing shots and shot expert in the Air Force. Fall was his favorite time of year and he loved the crisp mountain air.
Despite many health problems later in his life he always maintained the most positive attitude and would warmly call and keep close with his family and many friends. He would make friends and connect with people everywhere he went. He was warm and caring and would always build up and lift up others. He was extremely tough his entire life and his toughness was demonstrated later in his life by happily enduring many health challenges always with an amazingly positive attitude. He loved his family the most and his biggest treasure was each one of them.
He is survived by his wife Susan (Anderson) the love of his life for almost 44 years (their first date was flying to Monticello with his 4 kids and her 3 kids), his nine children and their spouses Shawn Stewart (Rosa), David Stewart (Shannon), Adam Stewart, Kevan Stewart (Carolyn), Jeff Dixon (Vilma), Canyon Dixon (Lorraine), Justin Dixon, Stephen Stewart (Nicole), Stephanie Lyman Stewart (Michael). His siblings from his father's second marriage Eliza, Vilate, Lygia, John, James, Joshua, Isaiah, and Natalie whom he loves. He has 34 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren that he adores.
Graveside funeral services will be held July 29th at 9 AM at the American Fork Cemetery 26 W 600 N St American Fork, Utah. Following the cemetery friends and family are welcome to come to a celebration of his life at the chapel at 270 North 900 East in American Fork, Utah to share memories and stories, to give big hugs (and large pats, we are Stewarts!!!), to smile and to laugh and to honor him.
