Doris Holindrake Bird

February 18, 1935 — May 5, 2015

Doris Holindrake Bird, age 80, passed away peacefully at her home in San Marcos, California on May 5, 2015. She was lovingly looked after by her son, Brian Bird, and grandson, Brennan Bird.
Doris was born in American Fork, Utah on February 18, 1935 to Vernon and Emma Holindrake. She was the much younger sister to Vernon, Harold, and Kathryn. She loved riding horses on her daddy's farm and reading every book she could get her hands on, sometimes at the same time!
Doris graduated from BYU with a teaching degree in English. While there she married Earle Bird and had two children. After a short time teaching in Utah, they moved to Vallejo, California where they had their next son and she taught English at Vallejo Junior High. She then moved to Napa, where she taught at Silverado Junior High and Napa High School. Doris was a teacher for a total of 50 years, including substituting, and she adored teaching with all her heart. She loved her colleagues and she loved working with teenagers.
Doris had a fun and free personality. She was passionate about Napa, San Francisco, the 49ers, movies, travel, festivals, good food, and life. She never said no to dessert and wouldn't let others, either!
She is loved by her three children Kriste Peterson (Tom), Brent Bird (Anna), and Brian Bird (Mignelia), 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, many extended family members including Joan Hahn and family, beloved nieces and nephews and families, colleagues and friends from her long teaching career including Nancy Wildman and Donna Altes, and all the thousands of students she taught.
Doris was an especially loving person who showed acceptance to everyone who was lucky to know her including her many friends and students. We will miss her bright, cheerful spirit.
Funeral services will be held at Anderson Mortuary on Saturday, May 16 at 11:00 in American Fork, Utah. A viewing will be held from 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Napa High Scholarship Fund.
