With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Craig Herbert Steed of Lehi, Utah, at the age of 76. A loving husband, brother, father, "papa," and cherished friend, Craig was called home on November 24, 2024 after a courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease.
Craig was born on August 27, 1948, as the middle child and only boy of Jay Elmer Steed and Patricia Herbert Steed of Wenatchee, Washington. He was born in Ogden Utah, grew up in Ely Nevada, and graduated from Wenatchee high school. Craig served a two-year LDS mission in the England North British Mission, and graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelors degree in advertising and marketing.
By 1974, Craig was twirling through Europe as an international folk dancer, where he served as the president and toured with their renowned performing group dazzling audiences on stages throughout the US with his mastery of the Ukrainian Hopak-a dance of impressive squats and high-flying kicks. It was there, amidst the twirls of the BYU Folk Dancers, that he met Ruthie Smith, the love of his life. Their shared passion for dancing sparked a connection that quickly grew into a love story.
On August 15, 1975, Craig and Ruthie were sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple. They built a beautiful life together in Cottonwood Heights, Draper, and Lehi.
As devoted husband, Craig cared deeply for his family, including his six children, 3 sons-in-law, 1 daughter-in-law, and 21 grandchildren, whom he adored.
Craig had an unwavering commitment to his family, his Savior Jesus Christ, as well as a formidable work ethic.
As a master gardener, he delighted in nurturing his garden and yard, amassing a "dungeon" of tools that could rival Home Depot. Though he may have been a borderline tool hoarder, he always had just the right gadget to fix, create, and craft. His crowning achievement was a towering 67-foot waterfall that he and his sons spent eight years building in their backyard in Draper-a true testament to his creative spirit.
Craig was the first to serve others spending 33 years waking up at 3:00 am in the winter to snowplow for the widows and single moms in the neighborhood before heading to work. He built a beautiful life for his children and was endlessly supportive and kind to his family.
As a successful entrepreneur, Craig launched multiple ventures, including Printing & Cassette Services, where he put his six kids and their friends to work in the assembly lines sorting cassette's and VHS tapes into Vinyl binders. Most recently he put his advertising degree to work through his company Unified RV.
Known for his quick wit, Craig was always armed with a hilarious one-liner, spreading joy and laughter to everyone, even in his final days.
Though his absence leaves a void in our hearts, we're thrilled for the new adventures he's embarking on in the spirit world. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered. Until we meet again, we love you!
Craig is proceeded in death by his parents, and sister, Patsy.
Survived by his wife "Ruthie," his children: Monica (Jeff), Sarah, Aleena (Geoff), April (Trevor), Douglas, Russell (Alyssa), and his sisters: Vicki (Ted) Brisbine, and Karen (Ron) Babst.
The Steed family would like to personally thank the entire hospice team at CNS, with heartfelt gratitude extended to his nurse Jace, his aide Ron, his social worker Macy, chaplain Mike, on-call nurse Ellie, and his external caregivers Mabel, and Rosa.
We extend our deepest gratitude to Wes and Lori Wagner for their incredible generosity, which made it possible to provide caretakers for Craig.
A special heartfelt thank you also goes to his business partner and friend Matthew Warner, as well as Ray Morley his dedicated reading companion who visited three days a week for over a year and served as his ministering brother. We also extend our deepest gratitude to all the friends and family who visited him, offered prayers, and showed love and care during this time. Your kindness will always be remembered.
