With deep sorrow and immense gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the peaceful passing of Christopher Woolley Evenson on May 11, 2025. Surrounded by the love and care of his four devoted children in his final days, Chris passed with his son Nic at his side, reuniting on Mother's Day with his beloved wife, Cheryl.
Born in Martinez, California, Chris lived a life defined by love, service, and resilience. After high school he graduated from Brigham Young University where he also met and married his sweetheart, Cheryl Johnson, in the Salt Lake Temple on September 5, 1969. Together they built a joyful life grounded in faith and family. Chris served as President of Salt Lake City Credit Union, where his honesty, integrity, and compassion guided many. Diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in his 50's, he faced the illness with extraordinary courage and never let it dim his enthusiasm for life.
Chris was passionate about the outdoors, and especially golf-playing, watching, and even making his own clubs. He loved fishing, bowling, photography, and oil painting. Chris loved college sports and watched BYU any chance he could. His hands were always building, fixing, or creating something, and his heart was always with his family. To his grandchildren, he was "Poppy," their greatest cheerleader and example.
A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Chris served faithfully in many callings, including as a full-time missionary in the Paris, France Mission and as a beloved Scoutmaster, where he mentored and inspired many young men. His life was a testament to quiet strength, unwavering faith, and unconditional love.
Chris is survived by his children Christy (Todd) Whiting, Marci (Dave) Whitworth, Kim (Craig) Helgesen, and Nic (Whitney) Evenson; 15 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren (and one on the way); and siblings Merrilyn Smith, Bill (Nancy) Evenson, Ray (Louise) Evenson, Karen Hopkins, Mark (Susan) Evenson, Janelle (Marc) Thomas; and sister-in-law Phyllis Johnson. He was preceded in death by his wife Cheryl, his parents Raymond and Berta, and brothers-in-law Ted Smith and Mike Hopkins.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at 165 North 100 East, Alpine, UT. A public viewing will precede the service at 9:45 a.m., with an additional viewing Tuesday, May 20, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Anderson & Sons Lone Peak Chapel, 6141 W 11000 N, Highland, UT.
Chris will be remembered for his resilience, kindness, and the deep love he gave to his family, friends, and community. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched.
