In Loving Memory of Carol Ray Smith Gill

Carol Ray Smith Gill, age 82, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at 9:55 p.m. (MT) at Holy Cross Hospital - Mountain Point in Lehi, Utah. She was surrounded by her loving family as she embarked on her final journey, succumbing to sepsis.

Born on October 21, 1940, at Johnston-Willis Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, Carol was the daughter of Lumus Ray Smith and Lula Corinne Hart Smith. On Saturday, November 16, 1963, she married Bernard Allen Gill, Jr., at Highland Park Christian Church in Richmond, Virginia. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and enduring memories for their family.

Education was an important part of Carol's life, and she graduated from John Marshall High School in Richmond, Virginia, in 1959. She continued her pursuit of knowledge by attending Lynchburg College from 1959 to 1960.

Carol also had a long and productive working career. Some of her career highlights include working at the FBI Richmond office from 1962 to 1963, the University of Richmond from 1984 to 1987, James River Corporation from 1987 to 1990, and Partnership Marketing / DSD Partners from 1998 to 2017.

Beyond her many accomplishments and roles, Carol was a woman of diverse interests and passions. She enjoyed painting, reading good books, and keeping a journal, which will long be a treasure to her family. Her love for beautiful music and the enchantment of musicals and shows brought her joy and inspiration.

On July 29, 1979, at the age of 38, Carol was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a significant moment in her spiritual journey. She served in various callings for the church, including Relief Society President and Gospel Doctrine Teacher. She faithfully maintained and exemplified a strong testimony of her Savior, Jesus Christ. Her unwavering faith was a source of strength and inspiration to her family and all who knew her. Carol's journey into the Church was made possible by the kindness of her dear friend, Betty Butterworth, whose introduction forever enriched her life.

Carol was a devoted mother, deeply committed to her family. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Bernard Allen Gill, III (3-16-19), and her cherished husband, Bernard Allen Gill, Jr. (6-8-23). Although they have departed this world, their legacies live on in the hearts of those who loved them.

She is survived by her loving son, Brian Hart Gill, who was a constant source of pride and joy in her life, and her sister and best friend, Sandra Roach, whom she talked to in person or over the phone nearly every day of their lives. Nieces Carol Minoughan and Amy Roach and daughter-in-law Ashlee Hess Gill provided unforgettable love, service, and care throughout her life and especially toward the end. Carol was also a loving grandmother to her grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in her heart: Karen Taylor Gill, Austin Alexander Gill, Andrew Hart Gill, Kendall Hess Gill, Tyler Allen Gill, Kaylee Caroline Gill, and Lucy Mae Gill. Living close to her grandchildren toward the end of her life brought many happy shared experiences and was a true source of joy for Carol.

Carol Ray Smith Gill will forever be remembered for her unconditional love, compassion, quick wit, positive attitude, and the lasting impact she had on those fortunate enough to have known her. May she rest in eternal peace, reunited with her loved ones who have gone before her.
