Mary Leta Hubbard Tyler

December 6, 1931 ~ May 20, 2019 (age 87)

Mary Leta Hubbard Tyler, 87, of Alpine, Utah passed away peacefully at home on Monday, May 20, 2019.  She was born December 6, 1931 in Abilene, Texas to Owen Hall Hubbard and Emma Leta Lewis.

Mary enjoyed a happy childhood with her younger sisters Janis and Kay. She was an excellent student and was the salutatorian of the Abilene High School class of 1950.  Following graduation, she attended Hardin Simmons University where she majored in business and learned shorthand, a talent she would often use in her career.

In 1953, Mary and a college friend decided to move to Midland, Texas. Shell Oil hired her as a secretary within a month of her arrival. Mary met Richard Lowell Tyler in 1956 at the Bachelors and Belles dance that was put on by the Midland YMCA. They were married on June 7, 1958. They were pleased to share a double wedding with Mary’s sister, Janis, and Janis’s fiancé, Edwin O’Neal. While living in Midland, Mary and Richard were blessed with four beautiful children. Mary stayed home for the next twenty years to be a full-time mom. The family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1966. They were sealed for time and eternity in the Mesa Arizona temple in 1968.

In 1973, the family moved to Traverse City, Michigan where they enjoyed snow for the first time. Shell Oil brought them back to Texas in 1980.  Both Richard and Mary worked for Shell at their Houston office and retired together in 1989. Richard and Mary were called to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 1990. Shortly after their mission, they moved to Utah to be with all of their children.

Mary enjoyed many things: family history, reading, BYU football, lemon cakes, keeping up on current events, games and crossword puzzles, playing the piano, and family talent shows.  Mary loved her family dearly, and her capacity to love and show kindness was one of her greatest qualities. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents and grandson, Brendan Mark Tyler.

Mary is survived by her husband of more than sixty years, Richard Lowell Tyler; her sisters Janis (Edwin) O’Neal and Hattie Kay Huddleston; her children, David (Heidi) Tyler, Mark (Denée) Tyler, Amy (Stuart) Gregory, and Paul (Tracy) Tyler; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
